Thousands of Words: Connecting Your Images to the Language of Your Life
Instructor: Lauren Keim
In a world where our mode of communicating is increasingly visual, have we lost our connection to the written word? We take pictures of menus to remind us where to eat; we take pictures of books to remind us what to read. Do we ever really write down anything meaningful anymore? Thousands of Words will look at reclaiming narrative by using photography as inspiration for the written word. Are you looking for ways to add evocative text to a family photo book? Maybe you struggle to write interesting Instagram captions? Did a snapshot of a long-ago vacation inspire a memory that you want to write down before it’s forgotten? Perhaps you’re interested in exploring a deeper connection between the imagery of language and photography. In this class we will draw on creative journaling, shooting assignments, and writing exercises inspired by both your own photos as well as others. No talent or background as a writer is required; Thousands of Words is designed to open you up to the ideas and creativity that can come when you pair words with your images. Students should have a journal for writing that they find fun and inspiring, the ability to draw from their library of photos, both past and current, and any camera they enjoy using.
